Primal Scream, 2ManyDjs, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Boomtown Rats, The Psychedelic Furs, Morcheeba and Capitão Fausto are just some of the names already confirmed on the EDP Vilar de Mouros Festival bill. The confirmation of Salvador Sobral was a surprise revelation made by the organisation at a press conference.

The most mythical Portuguese festival is back and promises to bring tons of music to Vilar de Mouros! For this edition of the EDP Vilar de Mouros Festival, which will take place from 24 to 26 August, the programme has already been announced. Primal Scream, 2ManyDjs, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Mission, The Dandy Warhols, The Psychedelic Furs, Morcheeba, The Young Gods, The Boomtown Rats, The Veils, Avec and Capitão Fausto are the first confirmed names for the 2017 edition. The presence of Salvador Sobral has also been confirmed.

EDP is the new naming sponsor of the EDP Vilar de Mouros Festival which has been dubbed by many the Portuguese Woodstock for the last 51 years, because of its musical spirit and legacy. For EDP, this is a commitment that is aligned with its sponsorship strategy in the musical field. In this way, the brand not only supports one of Portugal’s oldest festivals, but also takes this form of culture to other parts of the country. Over the last few years, EDP has sponsored other musical initiatives, and has already made its mark as “the official energy of music”.

Held on 24, 25 and 26 August, in the well-known natural setting of the municipality of Caminha, the EDP Vilar de Mouros Festival will, once again, be the epicentre of music in Portugal.

There have been moments during the last 51 years of the festival's life that will forever be imprinted in the memory of those who experienced them! Remember that the festival has welcomed names such as Elton John, The Stranglers, U2 and Manfred Mann. The great concerts by the OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark), the ex-Bauhaus Peter Murphy, the Happy Mondays, the The Waterboys and Echo & the Bunnymen will also live on. Iron Maiden, Alanis Morissette, Neil Young, Beck, Sepultura, Megadeth have also left an indelible impression, together with great names of Portuguese music, which has also featured highly in the Festival. In this respect, it will be difficult to ever forget the performances of Amália Rodrigues, Carlos Paredes, Tara Perdida, Jafumega, Linda Martini and Xutos & Pontapés. Along the same lines, the performances by Da Weasel, Silence 4, Blasted Mechanism, Rui Veloso, António Zambujo and David Fonseca, among many, many others, were also striking.

The 2017 edition is now beginning to build a programme which will keep its eclectic character, always with the aim in mind of offering great performances by fantastic Portuguese and foreign artists and discovering new talent in line with the spirit, essence, dimension and ambition of the EDP Vilar de Mouros Festival.

The Festival is sponsored by Caminha City Council, Vilar de Mouros Parish Council and Surprise & Expectation, and jointly produced by Dot Global and Metronomo.

The Mayor of Caminha, Miguel Alves, said about the EDP Vilar de Mouros Festival that “We are extremely pleased to see another edition of the EDP Vilar de Mouros Festival taking place in Caminha, positioning our municipality on the musical map of Portugal, which is a great opportunity for us to demonstrate our proverbial hospitality and the potential of our region. Having a brand like EDP associated with our land is also a sign of recognition and future stability for the festival.”

“We couldn’t be happier about this partnership,” says Ana Sofia Vinhas, Brand Director at EDP. “EDP’s commitment to music has been strengthened over the years with its presence in various music festivals with its own stages or through name sponsoring, concert sponsorship and the creation of a band competition, the EDP Live Bands. For all these reasons, EDP has made its mark as ‘the official energy of music’. By giving our name to the EDP Vilar de Mouros Festival, we want to impart great energy to a festival with such a long, rich history.”

Diogo Marques, from Surprise & Expectation, stresses that “it is a huge responsibility and a reward to be able to contribute to the vast legacy of this festival for yet another great edition. This is the second of a six-year contract, and we are determined to show our identity and our goals in full alignment with Caminha City Council, Vilar de Mouros Parish Council and EDP, to provide all necessary conditions to make the EDP Vilar de Mouros Festival an utterly memorable festival. For this edition we will be increasing the capacity of the venue to 15,000 people per day.”
