António Félix da Costa is EDP's new Electric Mobility ambassador

Tuesday 20, October 2020

EDP Comercial will sponsor the world champion of Formula E, the 100% electric vehicle competition. Sponsoring the Portuguese racing driver is part of the company's strategy for promoting electric mobility and reducing carbon emissions, with the goal of building a cleaner planet.

EDP Comercial will become António Félix da Costa's main sponsor. Costa is one of the most popular Portuguese drivers of the moment, in large part because this year he became the world champion in Formula E - the 100% electric car competition. EDP Comercial is thus partnering with a nationally and internationally renowned driver who has been recently awarded the degree of Commander of the Order of Merit by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa for his outstanding achievements.

Starting this month, Félix da Costa will be wearing the EDP logo on his helmet and racing suit; and, from January 2021, the Portuguese champion will defend his world title in 12 countries, bringing millions of spectators the values he shares with EDP Comercial: sustainability, innovation, and determination.
This partnership is all the more relevant because in the 2020/2021 season, Formula E will reach the pinnacle of competitive motor racing by officially becoming an FIA World Championship - which proves the relevance of the competition.

As the champion of the most renowned electric vehicle competition in the world, António Félix da Costa is also one of the main ambassadors for electric mobility, which is why EDP Comercial has partnered with this Portuguese racing driver. The company has taken the lead in this market and in Portugal's energy transition process, not only by creating charging solutions for electric vehicles, but also by striving to boost this segment on a global scale.

Formula E is yet another example of how electric mobility is here to stay, without compromising the thrill and excitement of driving, as more and more users can testify after transitioning to a more sustainable kind of mobility - electric mobility.

“I am proud to be the new face of a brand like EDP. We share the same sustainability values, and that was one of the main reasons why I accepted this invitation without thinking twice. There is a path we all have to take in our daily lives, and I am sure that more and more people are aware of the things they must change in their mobility habits. EDP has been playing a crucial role in this area, and I am confident that this partnership will bear fruit in our vision for Portugal and the World: a more sustainable country and planet,” says António Félix da Costa.

“By sponsoring António Félix da Costa we are not only partnering with an outstanding, internationally renowned driver, we are also taking yet another decisive step in promoting electric mobility. Like us, António wants a more sustainable world for future generations, and we are delighted that he will be joining us on this path," said EDP Comercial President Vera Pinto Pereira.

Commitment to electric mobility in Portugal

EDP Comercial seeks to meet the needs of EV users and currently has about 340 charging stations; by the end of the year, the company expects to have more than 700 charging stations spread across the country. The goal for next year is to reach 1,000 EV charging stations.
The company has already issued over 23,000 EDP Electric Mobility cards, which translate into more than 104,000 charges in the public charging infrastructure. This means that EV users have charged more than 1200 MWh worth of 100% green energy, avoiding more than 900 tons of CO2. EDP Comercial also creates private charging solutions for homes, residential buildings, and businesses.
