Fundação EDP reviews the MAAT's 1st year
Since it opened on 5 October, 2016, the MAAT has received more than half a million visitors.
In this first year, MAAT has offered the public an intensive programme with 23 individual and collective national and international exhibitions, itinerant exhibitions from other international institutions, site specific installations at the Oval Gallery and exhibitions based on Fundação EDP's art collection - a total of 442 artists have been exhibited, 137 Portuguese and 305 international and 22 works have been published.
National and international awards include the Time Out Lisbon Awards' "Novidade do Ano" (Novelty of the Year), Marketeer Awards' "Arte e Cultura" (Art and Culture), The Design Prize 2017, Iconic Awards' Architects of the Year 2017 for Amanda Levete, the project's architect, the European Steel Design Award and the latest Museum Architecture of the Year, LCD Awards 2017, announced last Friday.
Since June 2016 more than 400 articles have been published about the MAAT in the international press and specialist media (Art, Architecture, Culture, Travel and Lifestyle), including Icon, Architectural Review, Monocle, Wallpaper, the Huffington Post and CNN.
The MAAT building gave a boost to the redevelopment and regeneration of the riverfront, which also included the landscaping project of Fundação EDP's Campus, by Vladimir Djurovic.
"With the construction of the MAAT and a 20,000 m2 garden, the Fundação EDP campus today is a new centre for culture and leisure in Lisbon. This is a project that challenges us every day to contribute to a more attractive and cosmopolitan city" says Miguel Coutinho, a member of Fundação EDP's board and its General Manager.
Having recorded "visitor numbers that exceeded all our expectations" Pedro Gadanho, director of the museum, underlines the importance of a new challenge that "will be to motivate the public to return for the content that we offer."
For its birthday, MAAT is opening three new exhibitions to the public, is welcoming Moullinex, the alter ego of the producer, DJ and musician, Luís Clara Gomes, for the release of his third album, HYPERSEX, and is inviting the public to an Open Day with free entry to exhibitions, conversations, visits and workshops.
