As publicly announced by the Portuguese Government its motivation is for the State to acquire a direct stake in REN, in view of the next phase of privatisation of EDP which would result in the State transferring control over a sector of strategic national importance, particularly given REN’s functions as manager of the national central dispatch and as the technical operator of the Portuguese Electric system.
EDP further states that negotiations are underway, based on best market practices, and that it is committed to ensure that the interests of the Group and its shareholders and creditors are fully safeguarded.
