EDP launches scholarship for young filmmakers

Wednesday 18, May 2016

The Manoel de Oliveira Grant, created by EDP to honor the life and work of the Portuguese filmmaker, promoting conditions for the emergence of new talents, is launched today with the opening of applications.

The opportunity to win this scholarship worth 50,000 euros is available to all Portuguese students of film and visual arts. Applicants have two months, up to July 18, to submit an original film, either fiction or documentary, in the video format that they deem most appropriate. The works will be evaluated by a number of personalities linked to the film industry and to EDP.
The evaluation criteria will respect creative freedom, although a bonus will be awarded to films or documentaries shot in neo-realist style, namely using real-world sets and non-professional actors, thus resembling the stylistic universe of Manoel de Oliveira.
The scholarship funds are intended to exclusively fund training and specialization in the field of cinema, film production, directing and performing. It is a way to ensure the qualification of young filmmakers and, hopefully, to develop talents that can perpetuate the national and international recognition garnered by Manoel de Oliveira for Portuguese cinema.
With this initiative, EDP strengthens its patronage of various art forms and materializes the commitment announced during the launch of the 2015 institutional campaign - the only advertising work signed by the filmmaker during his very long career. Manoel de Oliveira died at the age of 106. The campaign 'Um Século de Energia' (A Century of Energy) was the last work directed by the filmmaker, completed a few weeks before his passing, on April 2nd 2015.
